News and Improvements in Creo 4.0
Creo 4.0 was launched 15th of November and I have had the opportunities to try this new version of Creo. Earlier this this we participated in the Pre-Release Program for Creo and I could try all new functionalities and enhancements. My immediately impression was that Creo is Creo, users will be familiar with this new environment and it is fast and easy to find your tools and features. This is really great with an upgrade and speeds up to the process to adopt this new version.
It's when I start to look at the details that I realize that it has happened a lot of improvements in this version of our favorite CAD product.
Selection and Mini Toolbar
A great improvement is the new Mini Toolbar that pops up when something is selected in the model or in the model tree. A typical measurement is the number of mouse clicks required to do an operation and the new tool will decrease number of mouse clicks with over 50%. This is also how the geometry is selected in the model. Directly in the selection the user are given geometry as the first choice, previously it was the feature and then the surface/edge/point. After the selection, the new Mini Toolbar gives access to the feature if needed, otherwise the user keep working from the Surface.
PTC has worked with Nvidia regarding graphics and has now made it easier and faster to work with shaded models. Also, now you can work with a full screen where all menus disappear and the window will cover the entire computer screen. This is actually a working position when the menus are displayed as the mouse pointer moves to the top of the screen.
A completely new feature in Creo 4.0 is 3D Sweep. It´s a solution to a problem that has existed since the birth of 3D graphics and the use of the sweep in models. It´s a problem that is based on a mathematic problem. Before the user has only been able to sweep a 2D profile along a 3D path, which actually has given wrong geometric results. This is something that designers usually don´t have thought much about, but if the user should design a trail that wraps around a model and a roller shell follow the track, the user will find that the track cannot be created properly. This is now solved with the feature 3D Sweep which sweeps 3D shape along a curve and this gives a completely accurate geometry that a milling or a grinding wheel can create.
Much more has happened. For example, the Sketcher has been updated to simplify usage, there is a new definition of date plan that makes it easier to create the middle date plan and there are two new hole types to use.
The new improvements in Sheetmetal will make every day easier for every designer. It is possible to close the corners for a more welding appearance. Twist Wall has now a dashboard and there is also a Mini Toolbar in Sheetmetal.
The best news in Sheetmetal is that we finally are able to use Flexible Modeling in Sheetmetal. It is something that we users have been waiting for and it really gives what you want when it comes to manage with this type of design. This works also for imported geometry and solid models converted to Sheetmetal. When I uses Flexible Modeling in Sheetmetal so I now understand why it has taken so long time to add this functionality when I see how great Creo manage the complexity in a seemingly simple model.
Two new improvements have been added to assemblies that will change how we work with our designs.
This is particularly around the models colors where it is now possible to save an Appearance State. This makes it possible to add colors and textures on the designs which are saved as a State. The user can of course save several States with different colors. The big advantage is that it becomes very easy to show products in different designs without the need to save different versions. The different Appearance States can also be used in Combined States. This functionality is also applies to Parts.
Another major change in assemblies is that Simplified Reps. now is gone as we know it. Now there is instead Automatic Reps. that will ensure that we always use enough geometry as possible in different situations. The older types of Simplified Reps. are automatically suppressed (you can add them with a Setting/Config.), but the idea is that the assembly should automatic simplify the geometry as long as possible.
